Eleanor Luxton
Eleanor
Luxton (1908-1995) was a writer, historian, researcher, engineer, teacher and
businesswoman. The daughter of Norman and Georgina Luxton, Eleanor
grew up as an only child in Banff.

After graduating from high school in
Banff in 1926, she attended the University of Alberta,
receiving degrees in history, a Diploma in Education and
completed subsequent education, biology and natural history
courses during the summers. Upon returning to Banff in
1936, Eleanor taught school for a number of years and many of her former
students have fond memories of her.
In the 1940s Eleanor studied civil engineering at McGill
University and upon graduation, was employed by the CPR in
Montreal, working on locomotive design. She later worked as a
field researcher for the Glenbow Foundation and wrote two
books of history and began a third.
After her father’s death in 1962, she returned
to the family home in Banff to live with her mother, who
died in 1965. Eleanor resided there until she passed away in
1995. She established the Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation
and left her home, one of the oldest residential properties
in the community, to become a museum.
Eleanor Luxton had a great appreciation for history, a
pride in her family and the foresight to preserve the Luxton
home and adjacent properties through the creation of the
Eleanor Luxton Historical Foundation.
