Georgina Luxton

Georgina Luxton Georgina McDougall Luxton (1870-1965) was the granddaughter of Reverend George and Elizabeth McDougall, pioneer missionaries in Alberta since 1862.

Georgina is said to be the first non-native person born in what is now Alberta. She was raised at Morleyville, the village that sprang up around the McDougall Methodist Mission to the Stoneys. It was the first settlement in southern Alberta. Georgie’s father, David McDougall, ran the Morley trading post.

She attended the Indian school until one was built for the white children. Georgie spoke the Stoney language fluently, and had life-long friends among the Stoney people. She was taken into the tribe as a Princess and Blood Sister, and given the name “Rainbow Woman” as she was seen to bring peace after a storm.

The Luxtons with Friends

In 1904, Georgie married Norman Luxton. They had one child, Eleanor Georgina , born in Banff in 1908.
